The Vision of Hans Henrich Koch
Hans Henrich Koch (1873–1922) was a Danish architect, designer, and artist whose extraordinary understanding of geometry allowed him to create something unlike anything seen before.
While architecture became his profession, paper became his canvas.
Possessing an exceptional ability to visualize complex three-dimensional forms as flat geometric patterns, Koch designed intricate paper constructions that combined architectural precision with playful imagination. His deep affection for animals, children, and storytelling gave these creations a warmth rarely found in the world of design.
In 1918, he published what would become known simply as Kochs Juleark—a remarkable collection of paper sheets featuring animals that could be cut, folded, and assembled into sculptural Christmas baskets and ornaments.
More than Christmas decorations, they were miniature works of architecture.
